Aglianico | Grape variety
Aglianico is a red wine grape variety native to southern Italy. It is known for producing full-bodied red wines with musky berry flavors, firm tannins and good aging potential. Even in hot climates, Aglianico can maintain high acidity, making it a particularly useful grape variety in the Mediterranean. Despite its comparatively high acidity, the variety is late ripening and vigorous, and tends to produce large quantities of fruit when not restricted by viticultural measures.
In their youth, Aglianico wines tend to be very tannic and concentrated, especially when unfavorable weather conditions force growers to harvest their crop before it is fully ripe. Aging for several years has a positive effect on the wine, helping to soften the tannins and improve the fruit profile. Aglianico wines are typically garnet red in color, fading to terra cotta tones after sufficient bottle aging.
For some time, the Aglianico grape was believed to be of Greek origin - its name is a derivative of the word 'Hellenic" - but recent DNA studies, as well as etymological and historical research, indicate that this is not the case and that the grape is actually native to southern Italy. It should not be confused with the similar-sounding Aleatico, which is usually grown east of there, in Puglia. - Gerardo
