Montepulciano | Grape variety

The Montepulciano grape should not be confused with the village of the same name in Tuscany. In the form of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, this variety produces inexpensive and simple drinking wines on the one hand and deep, dark wines with a strong character on the other. The main cultivation area is the Abruzzo region, where the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo of the same name - which must consist of at least 70% of the grape variety - is produced.

From the Montepulciano grapes arise down-to-earth to fine spicy wines that can be strong but also rich in alcohol. In addition, from the grapes also a well-known Rosato - the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is produced. In addition, the grape variety finds numerous uses in the most diverse Cuvees. - Gerardo [TS01/24]

"The constant improvement of wine quality in Italy in general and the still existing spirit of optimism has not stopped at Abruzzo, so that today you can still get rather inexpensive, but still good red wines from Montepulciano." - Falstaff

Fonte Cupa · Montepulciano d' Abruzzo Colline Teramane DOC 2018

Camillo Montori, Abruzzo

Montori's best known Montepulciano is concentrated ruby red in color. The nose is intense of ripe fruit with subtle undertones of undergrowth and vanilla. The palate is well structured, tannic and persistent. Characteristic is the echo of bitter almonds. - Gerardo [TS04/19]

"Typical and pleasant the Montepulciano Fonte Cupa with a smoky undertone in its soft olfactory voice. The aroma from the large barrels in which it has undergone its training has risen without interference in the full, juicy structure." - Gambero Rosso

The traditional, typical making of this vine is embodied in Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, with its mineral bouquet and juicy, smooth taste. A linear red, but of great character and fascinating, as only a few old school wines are capable of being." - Gambero Rosso

´Il Falcone´ · Rosso Riserva Castel del Monte DOC 2017, Rivera, Apulien
Il Falcone · Rosso Riserva Castel del Monte DOC 2017

Rivera, Puglia

"Sparkling ruby with a slightly pale edge. Opens on the nose with emphatic earthy tones, of underbrush and moss, then also of saffron, plums, some leather, appealing. Very juicy on the attack and course, opens with fine-meshed, present tannin, builds clearly, lots of juicy fruit on the finish, salty." - Falstaff

"Herb and ashy smoke notes underscore this creamy red, which offers expressive flavors of plump cherry, violet, rich leather and sanguine beef. Well-knit and juicy, featuring light tannins and lots of ground spice accents on the finish." - Wine Spectator

"The Castel del Monte Il Falcone Riserva does a great job of highlighting the Nero di Troia element of this blend. The wine is composed of 70% Nero di Troia and 30% Montepulciano, but with this balanced vintage we get a better view of this special native grape of Puglia. The bouquet boasts a wild side with bramble, forest berry and pressed violets. Other aromatic components include toasted nut, licorice and tar. The tannins are softly polished and help to give the wine a silky texture. This may be the best vintage of Il Falcone Riserva that I have come across." - Robert Parker

´Kurni´ Rosso Marche IGT 2019, Oasi degli Angeli, Marken
Kurni Rosso Marche IGT 2019

Oasi degli Angeli, Marche

According to the international press, the best wine of the Marche region. The Kurni consists of 100 percent of relatively late harvested Montepulciano. Part of the grapes are post-dried on straw mats, the same as for Amarone. The wine is aged for 22 months in barriques. - Gerardo [TS06/20]

"Lush nose with notes of chocolate, elderberry and mulberry, followed by tobacco and cardamom, impressive. Opens on the palate with baroque fullness, lots of sweet fruit, mulberries again, in the back course marked by dense, tightly meshed tannin, has rich pressure in the finish." - Falstaff

"Impenetrable garnet red. The aromas on the nose are intense with notes of licorice, ripe blackberries and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is powerful, concentrated, biting and very fresh. The tannins are powerful, juicy and of high quality structure. Endless and juicy finish." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

"The Kurni is a unique plant that can be recognized among thousands. Opinions about it differ, but it is undeniably a very personalized Montepulciano, with a phenomenal sales success. The fruity and creamy, then spicy density characterizes the Kurni. Despite its sweet and soft approaches, the taste evolves under the dictates of a uniform and very gentle tannin." - Slow Wine

Montepulciano | Grape variety | Buy at Gerardo

Italy, the land of culinary arts, is also home to some of the most exquisite wines in the world. Among these, the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape variety shines with its unmistakable elegance and character. This grape, named after the picturesque region of Abruzzo, is a true pearl among Italy's wine treasures.

The Montepulciano grape, not to be confused with the Tuscan town of the same name, shows its best side in the d'Abruzzo version. The region's vineyards, which are characterized by a rich history and an impressive landscape, offer ideal conditions for the cultivation of this noble grape variety.

The wines made from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo are characterized by their deep red color and intense aromas. The scent of dark fruit, paired with hints of spices and a subtle note of violets, gives these wines an incomparable sensuality. The structure is powerful and harmonious at the same time, making Montepulciano d'Abruzzo an ideal companion for discerning palates.

Another remarkable feature of this grape variety is its ability to adapt perfectly to the terroir. The different soil and climatic conditions in Abruzzo shape the character of the wines in a unique way. This gives Montepulciano d'Abruzzo a remarkable diversity, from powerful and tannic wines to smooth and fruity varieties.

The versatility of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is also reflected in its gastronomic accompaniment. From hearty pasta dishes to spicy meat dishes, this wine unfolds its variety of flavors and gives every meal a special touch. It always proves to be a reliable partner for culinary delights.

In the world of wine, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is therefore not just a grape variety, but an ode to a passion for quality and tradition. Its wines tell stories of the sun-drenched slopes of Abruzzo and carry the heritage of a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - a wine that seduces the senses and celebrates pleasure in its purest form. - Gerardo [TS01/24]
