Campania | Wine region
The Campania wine region, with its rugged coasts, rolling hills and sometimes very diverse growing areas, is characterized by its volcanic soils and mild, Mediterranean climate. The proximity to Vesuvius and other extinct volcanoes in particular has given the landscape a unique soil structure that is rich in minerals and gives the wines a distinct, often salty character. The hot summer days, cooled by sea breezes and cool nights, ensure that the grapes ripen slowly and evenly, which in turn intensifies the aroma and structure of the wines. In the various zones of Campania - from the high altitudes of Avellino to the sun-drenched coasts of Amalfi and Cilento - this gives rise to unique wine styles that are characterized by their freshness, elegance and depth.
Although the region is mainly known for its red wines with a high tannin content - above all the powerful Aglianico, the most famous representative of which is the long-lasting Taurasi - the region's white wines also deserve special attention. Varieties such as Falanghina, Biancolella, Greco Bianco, Forastera and Fiano are among the specialties of Campania and have long since secured their place among the best white wines in Italy. Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino in particular now enjoy an international reputation. Many of Campania's white wines impress with their complexity, fine fruit and striking minerality, making them ideal accompaniments to Mediterranean cuisine. Campania thus remains one of the most exciting regions in Italy, successfully combining both traditional and modern wine styles and offering wine lovers new surprises year after year. - Gerardo [TS04/25]
"The strategic foundations for their success were laid by Campania's winemakers back in the nineties. The main factors for this were the concentration on autochthonous vines, territorial specialization, the diversity of supply and a large market in the immediate vicinity, stretching from the Amalfi Coast to the islands, from Naples to Rome; the national capital is in any case the main buyer of Campanian wine outside the region." - Slow Wine
