Kalterersee Auslese DOC 2020

  When the Romans advanced from the Po Valley to Bolzano in 15 BC and conquered Rhaetia, they found a viticultural culture more than 500 years old. The assumption that Vernatsch was already cultivated at that time is obvious: the name Vernatsch is a derivation from the Latin 'vernaculus' = 'native'. In all ancient wine-growing regions of the world, wines used to be named and known according to their place and not according to the variety - just think of famous French examples (Cote du Rhone, Sauternes, Chablis, etc.). Even in the case of South Tyrolean Vernatsch, the designation of origin by area has remained unchanged over the centuries: Kalterer See, Meraner Hügel, Bozner Leiten and St. Magdalener are Vernatsch with historical local references and with distinctive terroir characteristics. - Gerardo [TS10/21]
