Nino Negri's “Carlo Negri” Sfursat di Valtellina DOCG represents a particularly sophisticated expression of the Sfursat style. Made from Nebbiolo grapes, known locally as Chiavennasca, the berries are dried in so-called “fruttaio” (fruit chambers) for about three months after harvesting to increase the concentration of sugar and aromas. This appassimento process, aided by the cool, dry Alpine winds, results in a wine with an intense structure and pronounced aromatics. After drying, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging for over a year in French oak barrels.
In the glass, Carlo Negri presents itself in an intense ruby red with garnet reflections. The bouquet unfolds complex aromas of ripe red fruits such as plum and cherry, accompanied by spicy notes such as black pepper, cinnamon, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, the wine shows a powerful structure with well-integrated but present tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long-lasting and characterized by an elegant spiciness. This wine is ideal with strong dishes such as game, mature cheese, or as a meditation wine, and offers excellent aging potential of over 10 years. - Gerardo [TS10/25]
