The “Le Tense Sassella Valtellina Superiore DOCG” from Cantina Nino Negri is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes (locally known as “Chiavennasca”) and grows in the exclusive terraced vineyards of the Sassella subzone in Valtellina, Lombardy , where granite and gneiss dominate the steep slopes and the soils are supported by mighty dry stone walls. The eponymous origin “Le Tense” refers to the historical protective function of these vineyards during the period of Swiss rule: the best plots were guarded by armed guards to prevent them from being diluted by foreign hands. In the glass, the wine displays a bright ruby color and a distinctly elegant bouquet of wild berries, bitter almonds, rose petals, and subtle rock and mineral tones—a typical profile of the terraced Nebbiolo vineyards of the Alpine north.
On the palate, it reveals a delicate body with balanced tannins and remarkable freshness, which comes from the high altitude and cool microclimate. It is aged in the traditional way in a mixture of large wooden barrels and barriques, which gives it both structure and refinement. The finish is long, carried by red fruits, subtle spice notes, and layers of undergrowth and fine wood.
