The Sassicaia 2020 harvest began in early September with the Cabernet Franc from the younger vineyards and continued with the Cabernet Sauvignon from the lower-lying plots. It was completed at the end of the month with the high-altitude vineyards above 300 meters. After careful selection at the sorting table, the grapes were gently pressed and destemmed to preserve their integrity and avoid excessive tannin extraction. Alcoholic fermentation was controlled and supported by regular pumping over to preserve aromas and freshness. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel tanks until the end of November, before the wine matured in barriques with a high proportion of new wood. After more than 25 months in barrels, the wine was assembled in steel tanks before being bottled for final maturation.

The Sassicaia 2020 is powerful and supple with aromas of blackberries, cassis, liquorice and fine spicy notes. On the palate, it has a dense, fleshy structure with velvety tannins and exceptional harmony. Mediterranean herbs and a hint of sweet tobacco lend it additional complexity, while the freshness and long finish underline its elegance. Despite its early accessibility, this vintage has great ageing potential and will continue to develop over the coming decades. "The 2020 Sassicaia is a bold, rapturous wine. Dark, fleshy and expansive on the palate, the 2020 offers up scents of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and crème de cassis. Potent tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Sassicaia is never a huge wine, the 2020 does seem to have an extra dimension of textural intensity. It's an intensity that is hugely appealing.Estate Manager Carlo Paoli describes 2020 as a year with a long, rainy winter and a cold spring. 'Temperatures warmed up in the middle of June,' he explained. 'July was very hot, but heat moderated in August. Even so, it was a year in which ripeness moved quickly, as opposed to 2021 when ripeness was more gradual. We picked the entire estate in 22 days instead of the 29-30 that is more typical.' The 2020 spent 15-18 days on the skins, followed by 25 months in French oak, 50% new. Production is down about 30% because of selection in the vineyard.' - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

  Tenuta San Guido's Sassicaia is a milestone in Italian wine history: Cabernet Sauvignon vines - supplemented by a small percentage of Cabernet Franc - are rooted in the sandy and gravelly soils of Bolgheri, in a terroir landscape characterized by sea breezes, steep sunny slopes, and cool night air. The name “Sassicaia” refers to the stony terrain in which the vines are rooted (“sasso” = stone), and the philosophy of the house is reflected in the uncompromisingly selective wine: hand-picked grapes, selected plots, controlled fermentation, and long aging in French oak barrels result in a style of finesse, depth, and provenance.

In the glass, this wine displays a deep ruby red color with violet reflections—a visual signal of its concentration and elegance. The nose reveals aromas of blackcurrant and wild blackberries, accompanied by cedar wood, tobacco leaf, and delicate herbal notes, complemented by minerality and salty coastal hints that evoke the maritime environment. On the palate, this dense fruit combines with velvety yet present tannins and a lively texture; the finish is long, carried by structure, style, and origin.
