Tenuta San Guido Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido | Tuscany

Everything has already been said and written about Tenuta San Guido and Italy's most famous red wine, Sassicaia. Nevertheless, we take the opportunity for a little review:

A wine with Cabernet Sauvignon as the main grape variety meant a radical departure from the traditional wines of Tuscany and Piedmont, whose typical grape varieties were, for example, Sangiovese or Nebbiolo. No one had ever thought of growing a Bordeaux grape variety in Italy, and it was all the more incredible because the Bolgheri area was not established in wine culture. But besides the fine bouquet of Cabernet, the Marchese's decision to grow this grape variety at Tenuta San Guido was reinforced by the similarity of the Bolgheri landscape to the Graves in Bordeaux. 'Graves' in French means 'pebbles', and similarly the soil of Tenuta San Guido gave its name to Sassicaia, which in Tuscan dialect means 'stony ground'.

Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards require a certain minimum age, so from 1948 until the late 1960s the original wines of the estate were drunk only at the winery. However, each year a few cases were stored in the cellar, and it was noticed that after a few years of storage, the wine improved significantly. As a result, two more Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards were planted, a good 250 meters lower than the original vineyards in Castiglioncello. The Aia Nuova vineyard, on the other hand, was located more in the middle and was also more exposed to the weather. Finally, from all these sites, the first vintage of the main wine was produced in 1968 and was named Sassicaia.

In the 70s, the cellar was moved, fermentation was no longer to take place in wood but in stainless steel, French oak barrels were used for aging. The Marchese's idea of planting Cabernet Sauvignon and aging it in wooden barrels soon spread throughout Italy. Sassicaia was the first Italian wine to be recognized internationally, and is almost universally considered the father of new Italian wines - or in other words, the pioneer of super Tuscans. When the wine icon Sassicaia was born in 1968, Italian Cabernet Sauvignon was also born. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

Le Difese · Toscana IGT 2019

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, which is aged for 12 months in French and American barriques. The color is a lively garnet red, with aromas of wild berries and plums, as well as light floral notes and some undergrowth. In the drink fresh and juicy, of typical Tuscan melting. - Gerardo [TS07/20]

"Bright ruby red with a sparkling core. A touch of reduction on the nose, opening with air on cherries, cinnamon sticks, wild strawberries and bright spice notes. Clear and juicy on the palate, showing good drinkability, pithy salty tannin underpins the finish." - Falstaff

"Fresh fruity nose with notes of small forest fruits, also fine spice; balanced on the palate, juicy texture with a pleasant finish." - Vinum

"Surprisingly pale – more Pinot-like than a Cabernet blend! A sweet-sour red-cherry fruit profile, with a notable herbal edge, perhaps reflecting the higher Sangiovese proportion than 2018. On swirling, some cassis joins the party and there’s a background woody, cinnamon note. That sweet-sour sense comes through on the palate too, with a ripeness of red cherry and strawberry cut through with acidity. Pretty fine-grained, powdery tannins that are more refined than previous Le Difese vintages I have tasted. A touch of alcohol on the finish, but overall an enjoyable, perfumed red." - Jancis Robinson

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2020, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2020

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

The harvest began in the first week of September with the grapes from the younger vineyards, starting with the Cabernet Franc, then continued with the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards at lower altitudes and ended in the last week of September with the grapes from the hills above 300 meters above sea level.

The grapes were selected using a sorting table to eliminate impurities and imperfections. Gentle pressing and careful destemming of the grapes to preserve the integrity of the berries and avoid excessive transfer of tannins. Alcoholic fermentation was completed at the end of October and took place regularly and at controlled temperatures. Frequent racking and pumping over allowed for excellent aroma extraction and fresh acidity in the musts. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel tanks at the end of November. In the first week of December, the wine was racked into oak barriques after frequent decanting to clean the musts.

At the end of malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in barriques with 45% new wood, 45% first passage and 10% second passage. After more than 25 months of ageing in wood, the Sassicaia 2020 was transferred to steel tanks before final blending and bottling. It is then refined in the bottle before being released onto the market. - Gerardo [TS07/21]

"The 2020 Sassicaia is a bold, rapturous wine. Dark, fleshy and expansive on the palate, the 2020 offers up scents of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and crème de cassis. Potent tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Sassicaia is never a huge wine, the 2020 does seem to have an extra dimension of textural intensity. It's an intensity that is hugely appealing.Estate Manager Carlo Paoli describes 2020 as a year with a long, rainy winter and a cold spring. 'Temperatures warmed up in the middle of June,' he explained. 'July was very hot, but heat moderated in August. Even so, it was a year in which ripeness moved quickly, as opposed to 2021 when ripeness was more gradual. We picked the entire estate in 22 days instead of the 29-30 that is more typical.' The 2020 spent 15-18 days on the skins, followed by 25 months in French oak, 50% new. Production is down about 30% because of selection in the vineyard.' - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

"Complex aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, iron, sweet tobacco and Mediterranean herbs are the hallmarks of this elegant, tensile red, which is already revealing plenty, yet still feels reserved, as though there were many more facets to be discovered. Superb harmony, freshness and a long aftertaste prevail. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045." - Wine Spectator

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

Italy's red wine icon turns 50: from 1968 to 2018, fifty vintages have passed and fifty editions of this seminal Super Tuscan blueprint have been created. Yet the 2018 vintage could not be more typical: Balanced and rich in finesse, this anniversary Sassicaia presents itself as an archetype for which a separate DOC was once even created. - Gerardo [TS07/19]

"Shiny, rich ruby-purple. Very crisp and clear fruit on the nose, precise, lots of cassis, blackberry and some leather. Also on the palate lots of juicy fruit, amazing freshness, dark currant, shows great tension, grippy tannin, fine mint on the finish, a long runner with potential for many years." - Falstaff

"All about radiance and finesse, this iconic Tuscan red has beguiling aromas of cedar, wild red berry, menthol and pipe tobacco that mingle with fragrant blue flowers. Made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the focused, elegantly structured palate is vibrant and savory, delivering cassis, orange zest, licorice and a hint of coffee framed in taut, polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it energized and balanced." - Wine Enthusiast

"Star bright raspberry in colour, this has an elegance and a sense of lift right from the start - a beautifully balanced, finessed and classical Sassicaia. The freshly cut and dried herbs of great Italian wines reveals themselves through the slow build up across the palate, along with gentle tobacco and liquorice notes. This is juicy and elegant, showing passion fruit and raspberry with an undertow of complexity. One to savour." - Decanter

"Refined and complex, this red is all about finesse and restraint, starting out with floral and black currant flavors that build steadily on the palate, with olive, cedar, tobacco and spice notes adding detail as this lingers on the terrific finish. Needs five to seven years to fully emerge." - Wine Spectator

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2019, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2019

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

With its clear purity, the 2019 Sassicaia is close to the model of the perfect Cabernet: even after 51 vintages, Tenuta San Guido remains true to its roots and creates a dynamic and finesse-rich Maremma Cabernet that walks entirely on the paths of the great vintages. Sublime and multifaceted, the Sassicaia 51 still sees itself as a super-Tuscan blueprint, for which once even its own DOC was created. - Gerardo [TS07/20]

"Powerful, sparkling ruby. Intense and clear nose with lots of incisive fruit, currant and mulberry, then subtle notes of cedar needles and spicy cedar, light resinous notes in the background. Shows cool and polished on entry, lots of juicy dark berry fruit, opens with grippy, dense tannin in many layers, builds long, very powerful on the back end, rich pressure, very long finish, some tobacco and subtle mint notes on the finish, a wine with great and long future, pressure and elegance." - Falstaff

"Enticing aromas of blue flower, cassis, camphor and spice are front and center in this stunning red. The lithe, savory palate features black currant, red plum and star anise while tobacco notes linger on the long finish. Elegant, polished tannins and bright acidity keep it beautifully balanced and focused. Drink 2025–2044." - Wine Enthusiast

"Sassicaia 2019 spent 25 months in oak (one-third new). ‘We are going longer in oak in the past few years,’ said Carlo Paoli, managing director of Tenuta San Guido. Quite pale in the glass, the nose is extremely graceful and intense with a lavender note enhanced by restrained bramble fruits, fermented citrus peel, an intense violet aroma and graphite minerality in depth. The attack is soft and full, the flavor savoury and cedary through to the finish, with integrated velvety tannins and lifted acidity. A perfectly woven structure is bound with signature freshness and fruit vibrancy, making this one for the long haul." - Decanter

"The latest release from Tenuta San Guido is the 2019 Bolgheri Sassicaia. The bouquet is up front and very expressive from the get-go. It offers a generous display of crunchy, dark cherry that hints at the extra concentration and fruit weight obtained in the 2019 growing season. This vintage will be remembered for the crisp richness of the fruit and its important textural imprint. It also shows fine elegance, bordering on the ethereal, with berry aromas, tarry earth and brushes of balsam herb or grilled rosemary. Sassicaia always shows an almost-glossy finely knit quality to the polished mouthfeel, and I find it again here next to fresh acidity and firm tannins. Mouthfeel in 2019 is the wine's strongest suit. The 2019 is one of the prettiest and most balanced editions of Sassicaia we've seen this past decade, along with the back-to-back duo of 2016 and 2015. The 2019 marries the precision of the 2016 with the rich fruit weight of the 2015" - Wine Advocate
