Pinot-Grigio | Grape variety
The red-skinned white wine grape variety Pinot Grigio is better known in German-speaking countries as Grauer Burgunder or Ruländer. In Italy, Pinot Grigio is always vinified dry and is generally medium-bodied with only subtle acidity. Especially as a young, light wine, it is mild, fresh and balanced - an ideal companion for warm summer days. Its medium body also makes it versatile for use in gastronomy as well as for a leisurely glass between meals.
Vinification is dominated by ageing in stainless steel tanks, which emphasizes the freshness and clarity of the aromas. However, ageing in large wooden barrels or in barriques also suits Pinot Grigio well and gives it additional complexity. High-quality Pinot Grigios develop fine aromas of nuts, almonds and fresh butter. These are complemented by fruity notes such as pear, dried fruit, pineapple and citrus fruits. Vegetable nuances - such as green beans or peppers - are also often present, giving the wine an exciting depth and character. - Gerardo [TS05/25]

Pinot Grigio - Italy's all-rounder among white wines
Pinot Grigio is one of Italy's most popular white wine varieties and is successfully cultivated in many regions of the country. The grape variety originally comes from Burgundy in France - where it is known as Pinot Gris - but has enjoyed a remarkable career in Italy in particular. Today, it is considered an integral part of Italian wine culture and delights wine lovers worldwide with its versatility and accessibility.
Cultivation is mainly concentrated in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, two regions with ideal climatic conditions. The cool nights and sunny days promote a good balance between acidity and fruit. Pinot Grigios from Veneto are characterized by their freshness and lightness, often with aromas of green apples, lemons and floral notes. Friuli-Venezia Giulia, on the other hand, produces somewhat more powerful, complex wines with hints of peach, apricot and delicate spice. This diversity of style is a key to its international success.
From an uncomplicated summer wine to a food companion full of character
Pinot Grigio is often described as an uncomplicated, refreshing wine for the summer - and rightly so. The majority of the wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks and are bottled unfiltered and without additives in order to preserve their natural character. These wines impress with their clarity, freshness and fine balance.
But Pinot Grigio can also be different. Some ambitious winegrowers, for example in Friuli or Alto Adige, dare to age their wines in barriques and bring out a whole new style from the grape variety. The result is structured, full-bodied wines with a creamy texture, fine roasted aromas and complex fruity notes - perfect for special occasions or as an accompaniment to stronger dishes.
Pinot Grigio is an excellent accompaniment to fish, seafood, white meat, salads or antipasti and its accessible style makes it an ideal wine for both beginners and experienced connoisseurs. It is flattering without being boring and, depending on its origin and ageing, displays astonishing complexity.
Whether fresh and sparkling or elegant and complex - Pinot Grigio remains a true all-rounder. Anyone who wants to delve deeper into Italian white wine will not be able to avoid this grape variety. And anyone who previously only knew it as a trivial terrace wine will be pleasantly surprised at what Pinot Grigio actually has to offer. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
