South Tyrol-Trentino | Wine region
Alpine mountain scenery and palm trees, a sense of tradition and Mediterranean lightness, Alpine baroque and avant-garde architecture, folklore and modernity - South Tyrol: the land of contrasts. The comparatively small wine-growing region of South Tyrol with its Mediterranean diversity has exactly the character to produce unique wines.
In South Tyrol, around twenty different grape varieties thrive on just 5,300 hectares of vineyards with the good fortune of more than 300 days of sunshine a year. More than 55 percent of South Tyrol's vineyards are planted with white grape varieties, which are made into the best wines. Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay top the list of the most popular white wines, and the trend is rising. But Sauvignon, Müller Thurgau, Sylvaner, Kerner, Riesling and Veltliner are also popular in South Tyrol and outside the country. When it comes to red wines, South Tyrol has had the two autochthonous grape varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein for well over a hundred years, but also all the other important classic grape varieties: Pinot Nero, Merlot and Cabernet. They occupy almost 45 percent of the total winegrowing area in South Tyrol. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
"In 52 of the 116 municipalities of the province, viticulture is practiced commercially. The centers are the slopes around the provincial capital of Bolzano, the area known as Überetsch from Eppan to Kalterersee with an almost closed vineyard area, and finally the slopes around Tramin, Kurtatsch, Margreid and Salurn in the South Tyrolean lowlands. South Tyrol's vineyard is a mosaic of 5000 individual farms. The number of pure winegrowing operations, however, is only just under three percent." - Falstaff
"If there is one characteristic that applies to all South Tyrolean wines, it lies in the clean primary fruitiness of the wines. Their fruit is animating, their acidity refreshing. A chronicler of the 1960s described them as 'cheerful' because they can be enjoyed in an uncomplicated and carefree way." - Dr. Jens Priewe

South Tyrol-Trentino | Wine region | Buy at Gerardo
The predominantly mountainous, or rather mountainous, area of the two provinces of Bolzano and Trento - more commonly called South Tyrol and Trentino - extends from the main watershed of the Alps southward to the northern tip of Lake Garda. Flat land is found here only along the floodplains of the Adige River and the terraces that accompany its course and along its tributaries. Agriculture in this wine region is carried out in intensive crops on small areas, it is mainly fruit growing and viticulture.
Viticulture has a long tradition here, the same applies to export across the Alps and to the neighboring countries of Austria and Switzerland. The climatic conditions here are very favorable for viticulture, the average annual temperature is over 18 degrees Celsius, and precipitation is evenly distributed. The cultivation of the Burgundy varieties Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero and Chardonnay is widespread here, and the region is among the leaders in the production of sparkling wines according to the classic method of bottle fermentation. South Tyrol, for example, is home to the highest sparkling wine cellar in Europe, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level. In recent years, Trentino has increasingly turned to the autochthonous grape varieties Teroldego and Nosiola, which are experiencing a new flowering with new vinification methods.
...sausages of all kinds, lots of juicy roast meat, potatoes, slowly roasted in the oven, fish from clear alpine lakes and streams, and in addition apple strudel, the likes of which you can't find better in Vienna - we are in South Tyrol, and to whom this typical construction means nothing, the menu will certainly tell you. After all, many of the tunks so beloved in the north fortunately remained behind the Brenner, a piece of Mediterranean flavor can already be felt in the gastronomic, and wonderful gnocchi as well as filled ravioli build the bridge to the south.
The valleys of South Tyrol and Trentino are therefore a kind of gastronomic acclimatization station, they help to make the culinary transition, that acclimatization to the 'other' with which Italy wants to surprise our palates. Magdalener, Lagrein Kretzer, Teroldego, Terlaner, Kalterer are the most famous wines here. There is much that could be said about these wines, but here is just one thing: the Tyrolean is not only a table wine, not only a snack wine, because in addition to the 'open' there are delicious varieties that await their full maturity when bottled. And here, between these bottles, the wine lover is presented with surprising and delightful discoveries. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
