Pichl is the name for hills in the South Tyrolean vernacular. Chardonnay Pichl comes from vineyards at 300 - 400 meters above sea level. The highly refined wine matures for a long time on the fine lees, developing additional facets. It smells like an oriental naschmarkt of pineapple, bananas, vanilla, cookie and dried fruit. Despite all its creaminess, it tastes racy and fresh with lemon peel. The sweetish fruit is accompanied by a balsamic spiciness, subtly reminiscent of walnuts. - Gerardo [TS07/18] Gerardo's Notes: 'Pichl' in the South Tyrolean or Unterlandler dialect is the name of a hill that stands on moderately steep terrain and overlooks the slopes. The Chardonnay 'Pichl' comes from vineyards located at an altitude of 350 to 480 meters above sea level, facing south towards the Adige Valley. The medium to deep limestone layers are irregularly interspersed with clayey quartzites. It is on these energetic calcareous and siliceous soils that Chardonnay achieves its opulent expressiveness. The cool fall winds during the evening hours provide the dynamic acid bite and zesty contours. Warm, southeast-facing vineyards with chalky pebbly soils interspersed with layers of loamy quartzite provide the special foundation for Chardonnay's expressiveness. The nightly, cooling fall winds are responsible for the important freshness in the wine.
