The Merlot Poggio ai Merli is an expressive, single-varietal wine that impressively reveals the potential of the grape variety in combination with the Tuscan terroir. The nose reveals an intense interplay of aromas of ripe plums, Amarena cherries and a hint of rhubarb, delicately accompanied by nuances of tobacco and licorice. On the palate, the wine impresses with its juicy texture, remarkable freshness and a long, structured finish that emphasizes its depth and complexity.

Although owner Paolo Panerai primarily focuses on traditional Chianti, this Merlot has a special place in the range. The Poggio ai Merli shows how powerfully and harmoniously an international grape variety can thrive in the Chianti Classico zone when it is vinified with sensitivity and respect for its origin. The result is a charismatic yet elegant wine that will win over lovers of modern styles as well as connoisseurs of classic viticulture. - Gerardo [TS10/19]

"Very well constructed, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Chewy. Full body, with plenty going on and a long finish." - James Suckling

"The Poggio Ai Merli is a pure expression of Merlot that opens to a huge sense of opulence and roundness, as only the best Merlots can do. This is a seamless expression that is beaming with cherry and blackberry backed by soft spice, tobacco and leather. I loved the textural richness and the way it so softly caresses the palate. If you are a fan of Merlot, this is one of the best from Italy. It's set for either near-term or long-term consumption. - Robert Parker

"Intense, rich garnet. In the nose of delicate aroma of ripe blackberry, some mint and a touch of oak, in the reverberation of varnish. Shows on the palate with rich pressure and gripping course, well integrated wood supports the drink, rich and slightly salty, currently still young, should spend some time in the bottle, slightly persistent." - Falstaff

´Poggio ai Merli´ · Merlot IGT 2018 © www.castellare.it

Poggio ai Merli comes from a unique single vineyard Merlot in Castellare di Castellina in the heart of Tuscany. The vines are rooted in calcareous and slate soils at an altitude of around 350-400 meters, where the southern exposure and special microclimate promote ripe, concentrated fruit development. Since the first vintage in 1999, this wine has been considered a “monument” of Tuscan Merlot - vinified in stainless steel tanks and aged for long periods in new French barriques to achieve both depth and elegance.

In the glass, Poggio ai Merli presents itself with an intense ruby red color and violet reflections - a visual promise of power and structure. The nose reveals dense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, and plum, accompanied by noble nuances such as cocoa, vanilla, and coffee, which refer to the aging in wood and the terroir-influenced grapes. On the palate, the wine is soft and enveloping, with fine, elegant tannins, a warmer body, and a harmonious expression—the finish is long and fruity. A wine that shines with main courses of red meat, game, or strong cheeses, but is also recommended as a stylish soloist in the glass. - Gerardo [TS10/19]
