I Sodi di San Niccolò is the flagship of Castellare di Castellina and a real jewel of Tuscany. The almost pure Sangioveto, supplemented by a small proportion of Malvasia Nera, comes from old vines that are around 30 years old. In the glass, the wine is a deep ruby red with garnet reflections - a first indication of its concentration and depth. The bouquet is intense and multi-layered, characterized by wild forest berries, accompanied by fine spicy notes and a hint of vanilla, which is subtly integrated thanks to the ageing in barriques.

On the palate, I Sodi di San Niccolò impresses with its exceptional elegance and depth. The vines grow on the eponymous “Sodi”, the stony, barren soils around the church of San Niccolò, which offer the plants very little nutrients and therefore produce grapes with great aromatic concentration. The wine has received numerous awards, including the “Tre Bicchieri” from Gambero Rosso and a place in the Wine Spectator Top 100. It is a flagship wine that combines tradition, terroir and precision craftsmanship in perfect harmony - a great Tuscan with great ageing potential. - Gerardo [TS10/19]

"The 2018 I Sodi di San Niccolò is the most elegant Sodi I have ever tasted, and I have tasted them all. Sodi can be quite bruiser in its youth, as the tannins are often imposing, but the 2018 is impressive because there is more than enough fruit to balance things out. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and gravel build in a Sodi endowed with mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse. Superb!" - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

The I Sodi di S. Niccolò from Castellare di Castellina is a monument to Tuscan winemaking: A blend of around 85% Sangioveto (an old name for Sangiovese) and around 15% Malvasia Nera, it is rooted in calcareous and marly soil layers in the “Sodi” cru vineyard near the church of San Niccolò, whose name refers to the stony subsoil that the peasant winegrowers once had to work by hand. Hand-picked grapes, gentle processing, and up to 30 months of aging in barriques—half of which are new—give the wine structured depth and great aging potential.

In the glass, I Sodi displays a deep ruby red color with garnet red reflections—a harbinger of its concentration and origin. The nose reveals intense aromas of ripe cherries, wild berries, and dark fruit jam, complemented by noble spice notes such as vanilla and licorice, which refer to the aging in wood and the powerful terroir. On the palate, it impresses with great expression, elegant, sweet-seeming tannins, clear fruit, and a lively freshness—the finish is long, carried by minerality and character of origin. A wine with style and potential that complements intense dishes such as game, aged cheese, or classic Tuscan roasts. - Gerardo [TS10/19]
