I Sodi di San Niccolò is the flagship of the Castellare di Castellina winery and a true masterpiece of Tuscany. The almost pure Sangioveto, a local variety of Sangiovese, is supplemented here with a small proportion of Malvasia Nera, with both grape varieties coming from vines that are almost 30 years old. The color of this outstanding wine is a deep ruby red with garnet reflections, giving a hint of its density and complexity in the glass. The bouquet is intense and seductive, with aromas of wild forest berries accompanied by subtle spices and a subtle hint of vanilla. On the palate, I Sodi di San Niccolò displays a remarkable elegance and depth that comes from the barren soils around the church of San Niccolò - soils where the vines have to fight for water and nutrients, producing particularly complex, concentrated wines. The wine has repeatedly achieved a place in the top 100 of the prestigious Wine Spectator list and has been awarded the coveted 3 glasses in the Gambero Rosso. The vineyards on the Sodi, as the hard, barren soils in this area are called, are particularly sought-after as they give the wines their density and finesse. This wine embodies the best that Tuscany has to offer - it is a prime example of the character and elegance of the region and shows how harmoniously tradition and craftsmanship can be combined in a single drop. - Gerardo [TS10/18]

"The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolo is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. The wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Sparkling ruby with a slight garnet edge. Opens with light green spicy components, coriander seed and white pepper, then it juicy cherry, some plum. On the palate lots of fine-mesh tannin with a firm core, builds in many layers, juicy cherry and fine herbal spice, firm pressure." - Falstaff
