Ottella | Veneto
The Ottella estate was still described at the end of the 19th century as the only winery in the Verona area (Veneto) that produced Lugana. According to tradition, the octuplets born here around 1500 were immortalized in the coat of arms and gave the farm its name. The generational change in the house of Lodovico Montresor can be considered successful: Son Francesco now runs the winery with 30 hectares of its own vineyards in the classic Lugana area together with his brother Michele. The vineyards have been modernized and all the vines are trained according to the Gyuot system. The planting density is relatively low and the yields are quite modest compared to the usual of this zone.
The style of classic Lugana has been not only preserved but also improved over the generations. The winery has been modernized, but the use of technology is limited. The challenge of the Ottella brothers is based on the realization that wine in general, and Lugana in particular, must bear a signature in order to be recognizable and unique. From this basic idea, Ottella creates wines of a modern design. The Ottella have always remained true to themselves: The characterful and racy Lugana of the house still has the refreshing acid-firm style and good shelf life. - Gerardo [TS02/23]
"Among the smallest DOCs of Veneto is the Lugana, which, on top of everything, must be shared with Lombardy. Its area under cultivation is below the 1000 hectare limit. The results, however, reveal a happy interplay of climate, vine and soil at often the highest level. This is evidenced not least by the parade of bottles produced by the Montresor family, who have been producing top quality wines in this corner of Lake Garda for years. Apart from a few red bottles, everything here revolves around Lugana, which they interpret in a rich but acidic style, so that it is capable of full expression only over the course of a few years." - Gambero Rosso
"Today, Ottella has 90 hectares of prime wine-producing land in Lugana and is acknowledged on the international stage for the quality of its wines. Its refined and elegant range bear the hallmarks of expert production and the accurate synthesis of terroir and varietal expressiveness." - Decanter

Ottella | Veneto | Buy at Gerardo
The vineyard of the Lugana area extends in the southern shore of Lake Garda, between Peschiera and Desenzano, in the provinces of Verona and Peschiera. Thus, two provinces share the Lugana DOC designation of origin. The soils consist mainly of glacial debris, these are overlaid by heavy, calcareous clay soils, which contribute to the distinctiveness of the Trebbiano di Lugana grape variety. The classic Lugana is always a slender wine, fragrant of exotic fruits and candied citrus, sometimes of apples and flowers. In the best years it has a fine acidity, is expressive, soft and persistent.
The invitingly designed Ottella winery is located in San Benedetto di Peschiera del Garda. After son Francesco took over, the art lover has discreetly redesigned the already sympathetic property with a loving hand: The old country house is lined with lemon trees and climbing roses, which also houses the office and tasting room. Modern art is a soft spot for Francesco Montresor, which is also positively reflected in the design of the labels.
It is now an accepted fact that the world of Verona viticulture is undergoing a generational change that is leading to large-scale renewal in all areas. This is also true of the Ottella winery of the Montresor family in San Benedetto. The assumption of its management by son Francesco has favored the specialization in viticulture, step by step redesigning all the existing vineyards. All the vineyards of Montresor are planted according to avant-garde criteria, the vines are trained according to the Guyot system, although the planting density is quite low, with yields that seem quite restrained compared to the usual values of the area. The fermentation cellar, which is equipped with the most modern equipment, is located next to an old country house dating back to the 16th century, recently renovated and now used to receive visitors and customers. The proximity of Lake Garda naturally brings many tourists here, so it is not surprising that a good part of the production is also sold abroad.
"Lugana, like the denomination of the same name, roams the southern part of the Garda basin. Despite a centuries-old wine history, for a long time people here have subsisted on the income from the tourist industry and progressive urbanization; grape growing has slowly been pushed into the background. It was only with wineries such as Ottella that interest in the wines from these clay soils was reawakened; they are now sought after in the market, and rightly so, as our tastings confirmed. The Montresor family made another leap forward with their latest range." - Gambero Rosso
"In recent years Francesco and Michele Montresor have made a strict separation of property. Now they cultivate the red squad - Merlot, Cabernet and Corvina - only on their ten hectares in Ponti sul Mincio. In Lugana, meanwhile, the red varieties had to clear the field. This made room for a self-performed mass selection of old clones of the Trebbiano di Lugana variety. The main characteristic of the now 300,000 bottles is a nervy, acidic style that continues to refine over time." - Gambero Rosso
