Malvasia Nera | Grape variety

Malvasia Nera | Grape variety

Malvasia - also known as Malvasier or Malvoisie - is a grape variety widely grown in southern countries in both red and white varieties. The addition Malvasia Nera is necessary to distinguish the red wine grape variety from completely different grape varieties of similar name. The origin of the grape variety is believed to be in Asia Minor, from where it reached Greece centuries ago and spread further. In Italy, especially the cultivation areas in the southern Italian Puglia and Tuscany are worth mentioning.

In Puglia, Malvasia Nera is recently vinified pure and is also found as a component of some Cuvees in interaction with Negroamaro. There are also specialties made from dried grapes and a condiment called Vincotto. In Tuscany, on the other hand, Malvasia Nera has found its retreat in Vin Santo, where the heavy and sweet character of the grapes is desired. In addition, there is an abundance of IGT wines in which, in addition to Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera is also part of the grape variety mix to give the wines more richness. - Gerardo

Governo di Castellare IGT 2020

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

Lively red wine of medium ruby color. Fine bouquet of flowers and ripe red fruits. On the palate soft, fresh and of pleasant drinking flow. Traditionally, the Governo is served chilled.

This typical Tuscan specialty is made from Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Canaiolo grapes. The name Governo stands for a traditional method of production: after the first fermentation, dried grapes are added to the wine to trigger a second fermentation. This process makes Governo di Castellare not entirely dissimilar to a Ripasso. - Gerardo [TS11/21]

´Montebello´ · Rosso Toscana IGT 2016, Badia a Coltibuono, Toskana
Montebello · Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Badia a Coltibuono, Tuscany

The particular elegance and depth of this wine is given by the complex harmony of the nine grape varieties; the intensity, balance and harmony make it immediately enjoyable and long-lasting.

The soils of Monti in Chianti, calcareous clay of medium structure and the perfect location of the hill of Montebello give this wine strength and elegance. Nine historic grape varieties: Mammolo, Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, Colorino, Sanforte, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo, Foglia Tonda, Sangiovese. Each grape variety is vinified separately and aged in small barrels in the cellar, located in the heart of the vineyards, before being blended. Native yeasts and natural fermentation contribute to the expression of complexity and harmonious integration of the grape varieties. - Gerardo [TS01/17]

"Intense black pepper on the nose of this wine feels straight from the grinder, backed by cardamom pod, tree bark, cigar box, red berries, rose petals and finally chocolate. The palate is spicy and peppery like the nose. Acid highlights the heat before darker fruit, spices and bitter chocolate come out. It's long, deep and harmonious." - Wine Enthusiast

´I Sodi di S. Niccolò´ · IGT 2017, Castellare di Castellina, Toskana
I Sodi di S. Niccolò · IGT 2017

Castellare di Castellina, Tuscany

I Sodi di San Niccolo - the flagship of Castellare di Castellina - comes from the vineyard around the church of San Niccolo: this almost pure Sangioveto (Sangiovese) is complemented with Malvasia Nera, both from vines almost 30 years old. The color is an intense ruby red with garnet highlights. The aroma is fruity and reminiscent of wild berries, underlined by spices and some vanilla. This wine reached the top 100 of Wine Specator magazine several times and also received the coveted award of 3 glasses in the wine guide Gambero Rosso.

Barren soils are a basic requirement for high quality wines. Therefore, the sites where the vine has to fight for water and food are the most sought-after for Tuscan winemakers. The sites called 'i sodi' are in complete contrast to the 'campi', the fields. On the 'sodi' grow the most dense and refined wines. - Gerardo [TS11/18]

"The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolo is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. The wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Sparkling ruby with a slight garnet edge. Opens with light green spicy components, coriander seed and white pepper, then it juicy cherry, some plum. On the palate lots of fine-mesh tannin with a firm core, builds in many layers, juicy cherry and fine herbal spice, firm pressure." - Falstaff

"The 2018 I Sodi di San Niccolò is the most elegant Sodi I have ever tasted, and I have tasted them all. Sodi can be quite bruiser in its youth, as the tannins are often imposing, but the 2018 is impressive because there is more than enough fruit to balance things out. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice and gravel build in a Sodi endowed with mind-blowing purity and exceptional finesse. Superb!" - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

"Permanent favorite here is the Turriga, whose subscription to our three glasses is silently renewed every year." - Gambero Rosso
"Brilliant ruby red. The aromas on the nose are animating, mascara cherry, black pepper and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is powerful yet harmonious, with fine tannins and a complex and extended finish." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)
"Sparkling ruby purple; presents itself on the nose with clear cherry fruit, then lots of cassis and plums; shows lots of fine-grained tannin on the palate that unfolds in many layers, describes a beautiful arc, juicy, long finish, a joy!" - Falstaff
