Sàgana · Sicilia DOC 2017

  Cusumano's “Sàgana” is a purist homage to Sicily - a single-varietal Nero d'Avola rooted in the limestone and marl-based soils of the “Vigneto del Torrone” vineyard near Butera, where the white sea of dolomite rock gives the soil its structure like candy. The vines, some of which are very old, benefit from southern exposure, low yields, and careful hand harvesting. Controlled fermentation at 28-30°C, malolactic fermentation in barriques, and subsequent aging in large oak barrels give this wine depth, character, and elegance.

In the glass, Sàgana presents itself with a dense ruby red color and garnet red rim—a visual promise of structure and character. The bouquet unfolds dark cherries, ripe plums, and blackberries, refined by hints of licorice, tobacco, and dark chocolate, which are expressions of its Sicilian terroir. On the palate, it impresses with full fruit, harmoniously integrated tannins, and a lively minerality that shines through as a subtle undertone. The finish reveals salty spice and a cool elegance that transforms the wine from a typical southern Italian to a stylish interpretation of Nero d'Avola. - Gerardo [TS10/18]
