Barbaresco Vanotu presents itself in the glass with a dense ruby red colour, which already signals its substantial structure and potential for ageing. On the nose, the wine unfolds a complex bouquet in which ripe dark fruits such as cherries and blackberries meet violets, dried herbs and a fine spiciness, accompanied by subtle hints of cinnamon, liquorice and stone, which lend it depth and elegance. On the palate, Vanotu is powerful yet controlled, carried by ripe, velvety tannins and an animating acidity that harmoniously balances the fruity components and leads to a long, mineral-driven finish. This combination of structure, freshness and aromatic finesse makes the wine an impressive example of the complexity and class of a Barbaresco from top vineyards.
Its origin and name are particularly noteworthy: ‘Vanotu’ is the Piedmontese diminutive form of the name Giovanni, a tribute to Giovanni (Vanotu) Pelissero, the grandfather of the current winemaker, thus expressing the family ties and tradition of the winery. The grapes come from the historic Basarin vineyard in Neive, whose steep limestone marl soils and south-west exposure give the Nebbiolo not only depth and structure, but also a special vertical tension. The vinification follows a classic Barbaresco tradition with long maceration and around 20 months of ageing in barriques, whereby the wood frames the wine without dominating it. The result is a Barbaresco with great presence, inner tension and remarkable development potential, which at the same time reflects the historic winemaking tradition of the Langhe in every sip. - Gerardo [TS10/22]
