Atilio Contini | Sardegna
The Azienda Vinicola Contini is one of the most important names in Sardinian viticulture and can look back on over 120 years of history. The winery was founded in 1898 by Salvatore Contini - making it the oldest winery on the island of Sardinia. Since then, the name Contini has stood for consistency, quality and a deep connection with the traditions of the region.
From the very beginning, the Contini family was particularly interested in the indigenous Vernaccia di Oristano grape variety, one of Italy's most distinctive white wines. The winery enjoyed its first major successes as early as the beginning of the 20th century: in 1912 and 1913, the Vernaccia was awarded gold medals at international exhibitions - early proof of the potential of this special variety and the winery's craftsmanship.
Even though times have changed and new names such as Robert Parker have made their mark on the international wine scene, Contini's quality remains undisputed. Today more than ever, the winery is regarded as a fixed star in the Sardinian wine firmament. With dedication to tradition, combined with a keen sense of contemporary viticulture, Contini manages to reinvent itself time and again without losing its roots - and that deserves unreserved admiration. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"With its founding date at the end of the 19th century, the Contini winery is one of the well-known and recognized veterans in Sardinian viticulture. Only a few kilometers separate it from Oristano, and how could it be otherwise than that the Vernaccia reigns in the cellar. The vineyards are mainly located in the Oristano area, but a few plots are also owned in other parts of Sardinia. This results in a respectable wine spectrum with old Vernaccia Riserva as well as considerable reds and whites. - Gambero Rosso

Atilio Contini | Sardegna | Buy at Gerardo
The Contini family business, now run by Alessandro Contini in the fourth generation, stands for distinctive wines with a strong character like no other winery in Sardinia. The close connection to the local grape varieties and the deep respect for the artisanal heritage of Sardinian viticulture run like a red thread through the history of the estate. The tradition is not preserved as a museum, but consciously developed further - open to modern technology, but always in the service of origin and authenticity.
An impressive example of this approach is the careful handling of the almost forgotten Nieddera grape variety. While other producers had long since abandoned the variety, Contini remained faithful to it. Today, the winery is the only producer of this rare autochthonous grape - and this perseverance has resulted in a wine that is unique in its kind: soft, spicy, berry and full of individuality. The Nieddera exemplifies the philosophy of the estate - courageous, tradition-conscious and in love with quality.
The winery's innovative strength is also evident in its white wine production. Under the direction of creative oenologist Piero Cella, the Karmis cuvée is a modern, fruity white wine that elegantly combines the typical aromas of Vernaccia with the freshness of Vermentino. This vintage cuvée, consisting of 80% Vernaccia and 20% Vermentino, is not only a successful bridge between tradition and the present, but also a prime example of the stylistic sensitivity that characterizes Contini today. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
