Kellerei Bozen | South Tyrol
Young, full of vision, and with a clear focus on the future, Kellerei Bozen today presents itself as a modern winery deeply rooted in the rich traditions of two historic estates. In 2001, Kellerei Gries and Kellerei St. Magdalena merged at the wish of their members to form South Tyrol’s youngest winery. The aim of this union was to make the already recognized and successful quality wines even more popular and to open a new chapter in the history of South Tyrolean wine. With a dynamic and consistent approach, coupled with decades of experience, the winery produces characterful and typically South Tyrolean wines that unite the best of both origins.
The roots of the winery go back to 1908 with Gries and 1930 with St. Magdalena. Today, Kellerei Bozen is among the leading wine producers in South Tyrol, standing for the highest quality and innovation. Around 200 members supply grapes from the best sites around Bolzano, ensuring that the wines of the winery regularly receive top awards. Especially popular are classics such as Lagrein and St. Magdalener, but also the elegant white wines from the top vineyards delight wine lovers far beyond the borders of South Tyrol. Anyone who enjoys a wine from Kellerei Bozen can sense the connection between tradition, passion, and the pursuit of quality in every glass. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"Since September 2018, the Bolzano winery has given itself a whole new look: after years of effort, the new cellar building in the Moritzing district was completed. The 2018 vintage has already been pressed in the new Bolzano winery. Particular importance was attached to the issue of sustainability in the planning of the new building: Thus, the new building complies with the 'ClimateHouse Wine' standard. Underground cellars and storage rooms allow natural cooling and vertical, gravity-based processing of the grapes. The roof planted with vines allows the imposing new building to blend harmoniously with the terrain, so the Bolzano Winery is already being referred to as 'the winery in the vineyard.' A visit to the new winery Bolzano is an experience!" - Falstaff

Region: Alto-Adige Grape Variety: Lagrein Classic: St. Magdalener
Kellerei Bozen | South Tyrol | Buy at Gerardo
In 1908, the farmers of Gries took a bold step towards independence by founding a winegrowers’ cooperative. From the very beginning, their aim was to vinify and market the Lagrein grape variety, which is typical of Gries. Especially after World War II, Gries Winery made a name for itself through the production of the light Lagrein Kretzer (rosé). During the sales crisis of the 1970s and early 1980s, the winery shifted its focus from quantity to quality and found particular success with its flagship variety, Lagrein. In 1930, 18 winegrowers from St. Magdalena, St. Justina, and Leitach also founded a cooperative, focusing on St. Magdalener - a wine made from the Vernatsch grape. Right from the start, they aimed for the export market, and with great success. In 1971, the DOC regulation was introduced to limit and enhance the Magdalener area. Despite the viticultural crisis that hit South Tyrol at the end of the 1970s, the St. Magdalena Winery managed to hold its ground, thanks to a consistent policy of quality. In 2001, the most significant step in the history of both wineries took place: the merger. Today, with its two locations in Gries and St. Magdalena, the Bolzano Winery ranks among the region’s top producers.
The promenades adorned with Mediterranean vegetation that weave through the city, the vibrant green of gardens and vineyards between the houses, and the three cable cars that whisk you in less than ten minutes to the stunning alpine landscape over 1,000 meters above Bolzano—all these features highlight the agricultural and mountain character of the city. Spending a few days in Bolzano means not only enjoying the unique atmosphere and the natural landscape, or immersing yourself in the city’s cultural and artistic treasures, but also tasting the typical culinary specialties and exquisite wines, including the local Lagrein and St. Magdalener varieties. Lagrein, which was already known in the Middle Ages, impresses with its bright, ruby-red color with garnet reflections and its round flavor profile, featuring notes of forest berries, hints of tobacco, and a touch of cocoa. Magdalener, named after the hill at the northern gate of Bolzano, is a blend of Vernatsch with small amounts of Lagrein or Pinot Noir, resulting in a harmonious, balanced wine that delights with its purple hue and aromas of ripe cherries, violets, and almonds. Today, about 320 hectares of Bolzano’s best vineyards, located between 240 and 800 meters above sea level, are united under the Bolzano Winery. St. Magdalener thrives on the sandy, well-ventilated soils of the warm slopes at the foot of the Ritten, while the distinctive Lagrein finds its home on the permeable, rapidly warming alluvial soils of Gries and Moritzing. This diversity of sites and growing areas allows for a broad range of exquisite quality wines. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"The administration of the new Bolzano winery is located at the headquarters of the old winery Gries in the Bolzano district of the same name. A blue and yellow archway above the entrance unmistakably points the way to underground cellars where the wines are languishing toward their maturity. The cellar of the former St. Magdalener winery at the other end of Bolzano, which was newly built shortly before the merger, has not been abandoned, however. It continues to be used for St. Magdalener wines." - Jens Priewe
'The Bolzano winery is not resting on its laurels. Despite quite a few awards and great market successes, it is always aiming higher. Recently it was announced that new preparation facilities are planned, where production will be merged with the winery Gries. Like concentrates, the wines of the winegrowers' cooperative condense all the merits of the typical Bolzano grape varieties." - Gambero Rosso
