Schreckbichl Lafòa | South Tyrol
Lafóa - five wines now bear this resonant name. But where does the name 'Lafóa' come from and what is depicted on the label? We explain the history of this special, South Tyrolean wine brand:
It was the 1980s in South Tyrol. Luis Raifer, winemaker and then managing director and chairman of the Schreckbichl Winery, returned to South Tyrol from a study trip through California and had big plans for viticulture. He recognized South Tyrol's potential to produce quality wines. The terroir was favorable, there were enough vineyards, and the winegrowers were capable. As a first step, he replaced the Vernatsch vines on his 'Lafóa' vineyard, a sun-drenched ridge behind the Schreckbichl winery, with Cabernet Sauvignon and later with the white Sauvignon Blanc. Alongside this, he introduced new quality standards: less yield for higher quality grapes and higher quality wine. So it was precisely on this pilot vineyard with the two wines Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon that the 'Lafóa idea' was born: the introduction of new quality standards in the vineyard. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
"In the 'Lafóa' line we now find five top-class wines: a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay, a Gewürztraminer, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinot Noir, which is a new addition this year. At the top of quality is a wine called 'LR', an exclusive white wine cuvée of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc, which seamlessly joins the ranks of the new super South Tyroleans." - Falstaff

Today, the members and the staff of the winery continue to work consistently according to this model - throughout the winery's vineyard and in all its wines. Especially in those that bear the brand 'Lafóa'. The first Cabernet Sauvignon Lafóa came on the market with vintage 1989, still with a different label. In the case of Sauvignon Lafóa, the 1993 vintage was presented for the first time. Recently, the historic wine line has been expanded with two wines: a Chardonnay and a Gewürztraminer (first vintages presented: 2015), which over the years have also reached the 'Lafóa' quality level.
All four Lafóa wines have a very special label. Often, when the wines are presented at fairs or events, the Schreckbichlers are asked the following questions: 'What is depicted on the label? The style reminds me very much of Gustav Klimt'. We want to get to the bottom of this question or observation here.
The well-known original label of the Lafóa wines was designed by the graphic studio Guardenti in Lucca (Tuscany) and adorned the bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time in 1993. The sculpture depicted, by the painter and sculptor Guido Anton Muss 1941-2003, Val Gardena; professor at the Venice and Florence art academies; numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, embodies the 'good spirit of nature' and is part of the entrance to Luis Raifer's estate. The work is emblematic of nature, which influences growth of plant and animal life. Small creatures of the earth surround the column, which opens upwards to the sunlight.
The label background is inspired by Art Nouveau - the artistic movement between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The era in which Gustav Klimt was also artistically active. So the observation that the label is reminiscent of Klimt is completely justified. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
