St. Michael-Eppan | South Tyrol
At St. Michael-Eppan, 350 cooperative members and winegrowers with their families are committed to a common goal: Quality. From the vineyard to the finished wine in the bottle, this guiding principle runs through like a red thread. From the hobby farmer with a few thousand square meters of vineyards to the part-time farmer who works his vineyards with love on the weekends and in his free time, to the dedicated smaller and larger family businesses: It is a colorful mosaic of characters and personalities, all working under the common umbrella of the winery - with a rich diversity of sites and varieties. Work in the vineyard is often hard and arduous for the winemakers. On the sometimes steep slopes, a lot of diligence and dedication is needed to produce the best qualities. When the whole family is in the vineyard at harvest time, rolling up their sleeves and bringing a year's yield to the winery, it is probably the most beautiful moment in the annual cycle of any winemaker. The effort is worth it. The prize for all members is the shared success of their winery. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
"One could write whole books about the winery San Michele-Eppan. Just as about their historic cellar master Hans Terzer, a true monument of the South Tyrolean wine landscape. But in the end it is the products that are decisive, and they have now reached a level at which only a few can compete, including a few noble labels, in the face of which not only our jurors get shiny eyes'. - Gambero Rosso
"It is considered structurally the most beautiful among the South Tyrolean cooperatives. Built in 1907 in the Austrian Art Nouveau style, it was never completed after the World War turmoil. In 2000, the hitherto rather unspectacular low building (south wing) from the 1980s was replaced by a modern new building, which now houses the administration, wine sales and tasting rooms. The number of members and vineyards have grown steadily in recent years - the result of the reputation that this winery enjoys. With its relatively high proportion of white wines (about two-thirds), it occupies a special position among winery cooperatives. Hans Terzer, the cellar master for many years, has not only led St. Michael/Eppan into the top group of South Tyrolean wine producers, but has also made the wines known throughout Italy and far beyond. The people of Eppan are not lacking in self-confidence." - Dr. Jens Priewe

Tradition and experience characterize the 98-year history of the St. Michael-Eppan Winery. Founded in June 1907, in an economically difficult period, the cooperative was committed from the beginning to promoting quality production in viticulture and ensuring a decent income for the winegrowers. In 1909, the building of the winery was completed in the classic Art Nouveau style. The plans and the construction method of that time show with what far-sighted cellar-technical guidelines were built already at that time. The entire construction is still fully functional today. After the traditional wooden barrels, the first glass barrel was installed in the cellar in 1933. In 1959 the first reinforced concrete cisterns were installed and from 1970 the first steel tanks were purchased. In 1975 the new storage and bottling hall with adjacent sales warehouse was built and in 1980 the new fermentation cellar was added. During these years, the first barriques, indispensable today, were also installed in the cellars. A plant with an eventful history with many ups and downs. Over the decades, constantly expanded, modernized and adapted to the latest requirements, the large and far-reaching reconstruction of recent years is, for the time being, a final highlight in the building history of the winery. Old and new, tradition and modernity form an extremely harmonious and functional symbiosis in St. Michael-Eppan. In addition to the traditional wooden barrels from the founding period, state-of-the-art cellar technology guarantees the highest quality. Administration and representation rooms are new and attractively designed. The new vinotheque in the Mediterranean-designed entrance area of the winery invites visitors to taste and get to know the wines of St. Michael-Eppan. Since its beginnings, the winery has had a clear goal and an important leitmotif in mind: it wants to do more than just make wine. The ambition of St. Michael-Eppan Winery is to be one of the best producers in the southern Torino. This is a high demand and not an easy path. The people of Eppan take it with all consistency - and with great success.
The work begins in the vineyard. Climate, topography and soils are the natural environment of the vine. To care for this environment and to work as close to nature and as gently as possible, that is a crucial task. Environmentally friendly work in the vineyard helps to promote the balance of the vine in a natural way. Green seeding between the rows of vines regulates the air and water balance in the soil, promotes humus formation, protects against erosion and is a welcome habitat for beneficial insects. Priority and targeted use of organic fertilizers. Timely and targeted foliage work also promotes light and air permeability and prevents the infestation of pests and diseases of the grapes.
The classic South Tyrolean cultivation form in the hillside areas is still the pergola. However, this is increasingly being replaced by wire frame training, the Gujot system. On the plain and on gentle slopes, the Gujot system has become established for all grape varieties, with the exception of Vernasch. It is not only the more economical production and less labor that speak in favor of this new cultivation system. Lower yields with higher grape quality have prompted the winegrowers to make the change in the vineyards. Consultation and discussion with the winegrowers, field inspections on site, recommendations for varieties, new plants, training systems and care measures are on the agenda. In addition, there is the preparation of the harvest plan together with the winegrowers. St. Michael Eppan, the innovative winery on the South Tyrolean Wine Route, is not only one of the best wineries in South Tyrol, but also one of the leaders in all of Italy. With 350 members, 355 hectares under cultivation and 2.5 million bottles sold each year, St. Michael-Eppan has made a name for itself that is now the talk of the town. The name St. Valentin alone makes the heart of every wine lover and connoisseur beat faster. From the long list of awards, only one is particularly worth mentioning: the wine guide I Vini d'Italia by Gambero Rosso & Slow Food has chosen St. Michael-Eppan as the best 'Winery of the Year 2000' throughout Italy. Cellar master Hans Terzer - one of the best-known pioneers of South Tyrolean white wines - was named one of the ten best winemakers in the world in this context. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
