Vintage | 2023

The year 2023 brought a number of challenges for wine production in Italy. Despite a decrease of more than 10 percent in the quantity harvested, the average quality proved to be remarkable, as the grapes harvested were of high quality. Let's take a closer look at the developments of the 2023 vintage in different regions of Italy:

The lower quantity harvested may be a cause for concern, but winegrowers can look forward to a welcome realization. The grapes harvested are characterized by their high quality, which is due to optimal growing conditions and careful care.

Despite general inflation and rising ancillary costs, wine producers in Italy appear to be slowly recovering from the financial burden. The wine industry, always sensitive to economic fluctuations, is adapting and the first signs indicate that cost increases are beginning to stabilize.

The home of Lugana wine, the picturesque Lake Garda, was confronted with severe volume losses in 2023. Hail damage affected the harvest and winegrowers had to deal with the effects of this natural event.

Abruzzo and southern Italy in particular, especially Puglia, are also facing challenges. Various vine diseases, in particular downy mildew, caused by the weather in 2023, are leading to significant volume losses. Winegrowers are faced with the task of protecting their vineyards from further damage while still producing high-quality wines.

Despite some adversity, the 2023 vintage in Italy produced remarkable quality wines. The adaptability of winegrowers and their ability to rise to the challenges contribute to Italian viticulture holding its own even in difficult years like this one. - Gerardo [TS01/24]

"The Italian wine industry is expecting less than 44 million hectolitres of wine from Italy for the 2023 vintage, which would be 12% less than in the previous year. The country's southern wine regions are experiencing particularly sharp declines. However, in times of crisis distillation in many EU countries, this is not necessarily a bad sign." - Vinum

"Despite losses in quantity, the quality of the 2023 vintage promises some outstanding wines, especially from cooler sites." - Falstaff
