Salice Salentino | Classic
Salice Salentino originates from the Apulia region around the municipalities of Lecce and Brindisi and is a prestigious DOC red wine cuvée, produced mainly from the Negroamaro grape variety, usually supplemented by Malvasia Nera in smaller proportions. According to regulations, at least 75% of the grapes must be Negroamaro, with the remainder supplemented by other red grape varieties from the region. In the glass, the wine displays an intense ruby red color, often with garnet reflections depending on age, as well as fruity aromas of cherry, plum, and dark berries, flanked by spicy notes and a quasi bitter-spicy finish typical of Negroamaro.
Salice Salentino is full-bodied and smooth on the palate, with medium to well-integrated tannins. The wines can be enjoyed young, but the Riserva versions, some of which are aged in wooden barrels, gain significantly in complexity and aging potential. Recommended accompaniments include hearty pasta dishes, grilled red meat, strong cheese, or game—dishes that give the fruit and spice of this wine room to breathe. - Gerardo [TS10/25]
"The wines from the heel of the Italian boot have caught up mightily in terms of quality. Gone are the days when these wines seemed jammy. Temperature control in the cellar has worked wonders here. Three grape varieties cover the bulk of Apulian red wines: Negroamaro, Primitivo and Nero di Troia, which in the north provides the base for Castel del Monte. The wines are consistently fresh, with lots of present fruit, but also have the fullness that one expects from the south. A sensual experience - and some offer this at a truly inviting price. A specialty of Puglia are the rosé wines. With their crisp fruit and freshness, they really make you want summer, sun and sea." - Falstaff
