Barrel-aged Castellaccio is made from 60% Sangiovese, the indigenous grape variety, and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. This combination, now firmly established in central Italy, has earned the wine the nickname 'Supertuscan'.

Coniale · Cabernet Sauvignon IGT 2016

Since the 70s in Tuscany is also extremely successful Cabernet cultivation. Coniale is such a pure Cabernet Sauvignon which was aged for several months in barrique barrels. Full of aromas of elderberry and blackberry. Dense and juicy on the palate, followed by a nice cherry note and spicy finish.

Owner Paolo Panerai follows the ideal of traditional Chianti; international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet are not to be found there. The pure Merlot Poggio ai Merli impressively represents the grape variety and the Tuscan terroir. The bouquet is characterized by aromas of plums, Amarena cherries and rhubarb, followed by notes of tobacco and licorice. Immensely juicy on the palate, persistent in the aftertaste. True to style and terroir.

I Sodi di San Niccolo - the flagship of Castellare di Castellina - comes from the vineyard around the church of San Niccolo: this almost pure Sangioveto (Sangiovese) is complemented with Malvasia Nera, both from vines almost 30 years old. The color is an intense ruby red with garnet highlights. The aroma is fruity and reminiscent of wild berries, underlined by spices and some vanilla. This wine reached the top 100 of Wine Specator magazine several times and also received the coveted award of 3 glasses in the wine guide Gambero Rosso.

Barren soils are a basic requirement for high quality wines. Therefore, the sites where the vine has to fight for water and food are the most sought-after for Tuscan winemakers.
