Sardegna | White Wine
Sardinia today has a vineyard area of about 43,000 hectares, two-thirds of which is used to produce red wines. The southern location in the Mediterranean ensures abundant sunshine; new vineyards are often planted in the lee of mountains or trees. The cooler north produces mainly fresh, fruity white wines with nice acidity and fragrance; the warm south and west sides of the island offer good conditions for red, white and dessert wines. The hilly northeast offers the best conditions for the white variety Vermentino, because there it is not quite so hot, and the granite content of the soil favors the finesse of the wine. A good Vermentino from the island has a flavor profile all its own. The first and only Sardinian wine to receive DOCG recognition is Vermentino di Gallura, which grows in the hinterland of the city of Olbia. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
"From an oenological point of view, Sardinia is a paradise of vines for the most diverse varieties. In the north reigns the Vermentino, a grape that nowhere else on the island gives such excellent results." - Slow Wine
