Sardegna | Red Wine
.Sardinia is one of the oldest wine-growing areas in Western Europe. The first seeds are believed to date back to 1300 BC and not imported by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians around 900 BC as previously believed. In the late Middle Ages, the Spanish dominated the big island and brought their red wine varieties. Then, from 1720 until the unification of Italy, the Piedmontese House of Savoy held sway and influenced wine culture. Through many changes of ownership, new grape varieties eventually came to Sardinia. Today, the Mediterranean island is an exclusive tourist destination and has made an impressive turnaround from mass producer to one of the top wine regions. Whether the white Vermentino or the red Cannonau and Carignano - Sardinia has very special grape varieties. Unconventional, angular landscapes and the azure sea with extensive vineyards and very different temperatures in the various sub-regions define the wine-growing region of Sardinia.
The most cultivated red grape varieties in Sardinia are Cannonau di Sardegna, Carignano, Cagnulari and Cabernet-Sauvignon. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
"Gone, apparently, are the days when the same names always appeared, mostly with IGT wines that do not really do justice to Sardinia's great treasure of autochthonous grapes. On the contrary. Only now the pride of the island and its winemakers - the vines, the terroirs and the denominations - is making itself felt in a positive and constructive way." - Gambero Rosso

Sardinia is known not only for its white wines, but also for its red wines. The most important growing areas for red wines in Sardinia are the regions of Campidano di Cagliari, Ogliastra and Sarcidano.
One of the most famous red wines of Sardinia is Cannonau di Sardegna. It is produced mainly in the Ogliastra region and has a deep red color and a strong, spicy flavor. It is excellent with meat dishes and mature cheeses. Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is particularly well known and meets high quality standards. Another famous red wine from Sardinia is Monica di Sardegna. It is produced mainly in the Sarcidano region and has a ruby red color and a fruity taste. It goes well with light meat dishes and fish dishes. Monica di Sardegna DOC is particularly well known and meets high quality standards.
Carignano del Sulcis is another red wine grown mainly in the Campidano di Cagliari region and has a deep red color and a spicy taste. It is excellent with game dishes and mature cheeses. Carignano del Sulcis DOC is particularly well known and meets high quality standards. Sardinia also has a long history of cultivating the Bovale grape variety, which is grown in different varieties such as Bovale Sardo and Bovale Grande, and is used for both red and rosé wines.
In recent years, Sardinian wine producers have invested a lot in improving the quality of their wines and there is now a wide range of high quality red wines. Some wineries also offer wine tastings and guided tours of the growing areas to learn about and taste the different types of wine. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
