Atilio Contini | Sardegna

The Azienda Vinicola Contini is a bedrock of Sardinian viticulture and the winery, founded more than 120 years ago by Salvatore Contini, is considered the oldest on the island. The family's winemaking tradition thus dates back to 1898 and has always been accompanied by great attention and recognition from wine critics. The ever-present Vernaccia di Oristano won gold medals as early as 1912 and 1913 at the 'International Exhibition" - now superseded by the wine pope Robert Parker and many others. In the case of Contini, the adulation is appropriate, the always quality-oriented house is the first star in the Sardinian wine sky. - Gerardo [TS05/23]

"With its founding date at the end of the 19th century, the Contini winery is one of the well-known and recognized veterans in Sardinian viticulture. Only a few kilometers separate it from Oristano, and how could it be otherwise than that the Vernaccia reigns in the cellar. The vineyards are mainly located in the Oristano area, but a few plots are also owned in other parts of Sardinia. This results in a respectable wine spectrum with old Vernaccia Riserva as well as considerable reds and whites. - Gambero Rosso

The wine boasts a light and forthcoming style with a strong floral component that is contrasted against a tangy, fruity side. It delivers on its promise of freshness and clean simplicity." - Robert Parker

I Giganti · Isola dei Nuraghi Rosso IGT 2016

Attilio Contini, Sardegna

The color in the glass is a dark ruby red with garnet highlights. The nose is intense, with hints of red fruits and spices, underpinned by balsamic notes. The palate is soft and warm, balanced by finely honed tannins and freshness. - Gerardo [TS12/17]

The namesake giants are a reference to the giants of Mont'e Prama, formerly freestanding sandstone cult statues of the Sardinian nuragic culture. In 1974, the farmer Sisinnio Poddi plowed out the head of one of these statues on the Sinis Peninsula. The forty years of excavation campaigns brought to light other statues, nuraghe models and wall remains. The age of the giants of Mont'e Prama indicates that the oldest free-standing large sculpture in Europe was created in Sardinia, even before a similar development began in Greece.

Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori is a cuvée made by the solera method, with a base dating back to the early 1900s and topped up only with the best vintage. Cited by Hugh Johnson as one of the 20 wines to have tasted once in a lifetime.

The aroma is reminiscent of toasted almonds and hazelnuts, intense and complex as the aging that takes place in barrels of precious woods and lasts for decades. Velvety as an embrace, warm and dry as a tropical breeze, ideal for meditation and spicy cheeses. - Gerardo [TS12/77]

Atilio Contini | Sardegna | Buy at Gerardo

In general, the family business - now run by Alessandro Contini in the fourth generation - stands for exceptional growths like no other estate in Sardinia. The knowledge of how to handle original varieties, which guarantee unmistakable and characterful enjoyment, has never been forgotten in the family. For with all, also necessary, openness to the achievements of modern viticultural technology, tradition lives on in progress at Contini. For example, without the family's commitment, the extremely exciting Nieddera variety would probably have been forgotten over time. Today, however, Contini is the only producer of this rare variety, and this foresight and perseverance have given us an exceptional, high-class crescent that is captivating for its berry-scented, soft-spicy character. Another example of the creativity and innovation of oenologist Piero Cella is the uncompromisingly selected vintage cuvèe Karmis, an enchantingly fruity blend of Vernaccia grapes with a twenty percent Vermentino content. - Gerardo [TS12/22]
