Cabernet-Franc | Grape variety

Cabernet-Franc | Grape variety

Cabernet Franc - this dark grape variety, originally French, is still overshadowed by the much better known Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are usually somewhat lighter, less tannic and ripen earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. Nevertheless, the Cabernet Franc waits with its unadulterated, herbaceous aroma.

To date, this grape variety is one of the six permitted, which may be used for Bordeaux wines. Together with Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot, it forms the basis for almost all red Bordeaux. But the grape variety also enjoys a certain popularity in Italy and allows winemakers additional freedom in developing their own cuvees. Unlike its big brother Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc is far more aromatic and has notes of herbs, grasses and spices. - Gerardo

´Burdese´ · Sicilia Menfi Rosso DOC 2018, Planeta, Sizilien
Burdese · Sicilia Menfi Rosso DOC 2018

Planeta, Sicily

Interesting cuveé of Cabernet-Sauvignon and Cabernet-Franc: Deep, concentrated ruby red in the glass. The bouquet is dense and concentrated, reminiscent of ripe red fruits and sour cherry, with light hints of cocoa and minerals. Wonderfully balsamic, full-bodied and silky on the palate. Great Sicilian! - Gerardo [TS08/19]

"Bright ruby with a rich violet sheen. Very intense nose with lots of ripe dark berry fruit, at the beginning a lot of tobacco and leather, then full of dark currants and blackberries, carob in the background. Straightforward and clear on the palate, lots of juicy fruit, then opens with firm, sturdy tannin, gives the wine a lot of grip, long finish." - Falstaff

"With ample intensity and definition, this wine shows the power of two Bordeaux grapes, 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, with the softness and sunny sweetness you might expect of a warm wine territory such as Sicily. The Planeta 2016 Sicilia Menfi Burdese shows a dark garnet appearance and medium rich concentration. Dried spice, scorched earth and black fruit appear on the bouquet. There is a dry, almost dusty quality to the tannins that are present but without any noticeable astringency. This would match up nicely with a classic Sicilian skillet of fennel sausage, orange slices and bread." - Robert Parker

´Kirchhügel´ · Cabernet Riserva DOC 2020, Kellerei Kurtatsch, Südtirol
Kirchhügel · Cabernet Riserva DOC 2020

Kellerei Kurtatsch, South Tyrol

Various small vineyards on gravelly soils with clay content at 250 - 350 meters above sea level are included in Cabernet 'Kirchhügel'. Even in decidedly sunny years, Cabernet 'Kirchhügel' does not become bulky and broad. A typical Unterlandler acidic nerve gives the muscular body sinew and impressive staying power in the bottle. If you are patient with Cabernet 'Kirchhügel', you will be rewarded with exciting tertiary aromas after extended bottle aging, reminiscent of an oriental tea ceremony: cedar, suede, tobacco, toasted hazelnut, cookie and dried blackberries. - Gerardo [TS07/21]

"Somewhat nutty and dried-vegetable to tobacco aromas of ripe blackcurrants with herbal nuances and a hint of tomato paste. Clear, quite juicy, youthful fruit, fine tannin, some bite, herbal and restrained smoky aromas on the palate, good persistence, a little tobacco, ash and mint, salt in the background, a hint of licorice and a little dark ethereal spice, gains depth with air, very good, juicy and spicy finish." - Wein-Plus.eu

Didacus · Sicilia Menfi Rosso DOC 2017

Planeta, Sicily

"The back label of the two Didacus wines - the white from Chardonnay, the red from Cabernet Franc - reads: 'This bottle contains our vision of wine. Elegance and tradition. Family and future. Sicily as we have always dreamed of it.' Menfi and its vineyards between the sea and the hills, as a place of choice for growing French varieties - almost a Bolgheri of the South - is a vision that has accompanied the Planeta family since the mid-1980s." - Falstaff

"The 2017 Cabernet Franc Didacus is dark, deep and intense, with arching blue florals giving way to masses of currants, plums and licorice. It’s silky with a dense wave of mineral-tinged black fruits carried across a core of motivating acidity that lifts the expression nicely. This leaves tart wild berries, along with hints of mocha over a coating of sweet tannins, coming across as structured yet also remarkably fresh. The heat of the vintage has pushed the volume up on the 2017 Cabernet Franc Didacus and while more-classic vintages will likely outpace it in the cellar over time, the balance here is beautiful." - Vinous

Tignanello · Rosso Toscana IGT 2020

Tenuta Tignanello - Marchese Antinori, Tuscany

Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern red wine to be blended with non-traditional grape varieties (such as Cabernet), and one of the first Chianti Classico red wines not to use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It is made from a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. - Gerardo [TS11/21]

"Vibrant ruby garnet red. Animating and ethereal aromas on the nose, with hints of cherry water, vanilla, leather, Amarena cherry, floral notes of violets and a touch of cocoa butter in the background. Salty and warm on the palate, excellent body, with silky and fine tannins and excellent length." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

"Rich ruby with a delicate garnet rim. Very clear and precise nose, smells of ripe, plump cherries and blackberries, with delicate notes of chestnuts and blood oranges. Firm, hearty tannins characterize the palate, lots of juicy fruit, builds full-bodied." - Falstaff

"The nose on the 2019 vintage of this Super Tuscan benchmark is soft and dense, with dark macerated berries in tension with green and black pepper, a hint of hibiscus or a cranberry tea, followed by tanned leather, wet soil and moss under a tree. The palate echoes the nose but adds more decadent notes of plum, fig and chocolate mousse, with tannins that feel like a good pair of loafers—supportive, but comfortable. It’s long and harmonious." - Danielle Callegari (Wine Enthusiast)

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2020, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2020

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

The harvest began in the first week of September with the grapes from the younger vineyards, starting with the Cabernet Franc, then continued with the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards at lower altitudes and ended in the last week of September with the grapes from the hills above 300 meters above sea level.

The grapes were selected using a sorting table to eliminate impurities and imperfections. Gentle pressing and careful destemming of the grapes to preserve the integrity of the berries and avoid excessive transfer of tannins. Alcoholic fermentation was completed at the end of October and took place regularly and at controlled temperatures. Frequent racking and pumping over allowed for excellent aroma extraction and fresh acidity in the musts. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel tanks at the end of November. In the first week of December, the wine was racked into oak barriques after frequent decanting to clean the musts.

At the end of malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in barriques with 45% new wood, 45% first passage and 10% second passage. After more than 25 months of ageing in wood, the Sassicaia 2020 was transferred to steel tanks before final blending and bottling. It is then refined in the bottle before being released onto the market. - Gerardo [TS07/21]

"The 2020 Sassicaia is a bold, rapturous wine. Dark, fleshy and expansive on the palate, the 2020 offers up scents of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, new leather, licorice and crème de cassis. Potent tannins are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. Sassicaia is never a huge wine, the 2020 does seem to have an extra dimension of textural intensity. It's an intensity that is hugely appealing.Estate Manager Carlo Paoli describes 2020 as a year with a long, rainy winter and a cold spring. 'Temperatures warmed up in the middle of June,' he explained. 'July was very hot, but heat moderated in August. Even so, it was a year in which ripeness moved quickly, as opposed to 2021 when ripeness was more gradual. We picked the entire estate in 22 days instead of the 29-30 that is more typical.' The 2020 spent 15-18 days on the skins, followed by 25 months in French oak, 50% new. Production is down about 30% because of selection in the vineyard.' - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)

"Complex aromas and flavors of black currant, blackberry, iron, sweet tobacco and Mediterranean herbs are the hallmarks of this elegant, tensile red, which is already revealing plenty, yet still feels reserved, as though there were many more facets to be discovered. Superb harmony, freshness and a long aftertaste prevail. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2045." - Wine Spectator

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2018

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

Italy's red wine icon turns 50: from 1968 to 2018, fifty vintages have passed and fifty editions of this seminal Super Tuscan blueprint have been created. Yet the 2018 vintage could not be more typical: Balanced and rich in finesse, this anniversary Sassicaia presents itself as an archetype for which a separate DOC was once even created. - Gerardo [TS07/19]

"Shiny, rich ruby-purple. Very crisp and clear fruit on the nose, precise, lots of cassis, blackberry and some leather. Also on the palate lots of juicy fruit, amazing freshness, dark currant, shows great tension, grippy tannin, fine mint on the finish, a long runner with potential for many years." - Falstaff

"All about radiance and finesse, this iconic Tuscan red has beguiling aromas of cedar, wild red berry, menthol and pipe tobacco that mingle with fragrant blue flowers. Made with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the focused, elegantly structured palate is vibrant and savory, delivering cassis, orange zest, licorice and a hint of coffee framed in taut, polished tannins. Bright acidity keeps it energized and balanced." - Wine Enthusiast

"Star bright raspberry in colour, this has an elegance and a sense of lift right from the start - a beautifully balanced, finessed and classical Sassicaia. The freshly cut and dried herbs of great Italian wines reveals themselves through the slow build up across the palate, along with gentle tobacco and liquorice notes. This is juicy and elegant, showing passion fruit and raspberry with an undertow of complexity. One to savour." - Decanter

"Refined and complex, this red is all about finesse and restraint, starting out with floral and black currant flavors that build steadily on the palate, with olive, cedar, tobacco and spice notes adding detail as this lingers on the terrific finish. Needs five to seven years to fully emerge." - Wine Spectator

´Sassicaia´ · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2019, Tenuta San Guido, Toskana
Sassicaia · Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC 2019

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

With its clear purity, the 2019 Sassicaia is close to the model of the perfect Cabernet: even after 51 vintages, Tenuta San Guido remains true to its roots and creates a dynamic and finesse-rich Maremma Cabernet that walks entirely on the paths of the great vintages. Sublime and multifaceted, the Sassicaia 51 still sees itself as a super-Tuscan blueprint, for which once even its own DOC was created. - Gerardo [TS07/20]

"Powerful, sparkling ruby. Intense and clear nose with lots of incisive fruit, currant and mulberry, then subtle notes of cedar needles and spicy cedar, light resinous notes in the background. Shows cool and polished on entry, lots of juicy dark berry fruit, opens with grippy, dense tannin in many layers, builds long, very powerful on the back end, rich pressure, very long finish, some tobacco and subtle mint notes on the finish, a wine with great and long future, pressure and elegance." - Falstaff

"Enticing aromas of blue flower, cassis, camphor and spice are front and center in this stunning red. The lithe, savory palate features black currant, red plum and star anise while tobacco notes linger on the long finish. Elegant, polished tannins and bright acidity keep it beautifully balanced and focused. Drink 2025–2044." - Wine Enthusiast

"Sassicaia 2019 spent 25 months in oak (one-third new). ‘We are going longer in oak in the past few years,’ said Carlo Paoli, managing director of Tenuta San Guido. Quite pale in the glass, the nose is extremely graceful and intense with a lavender note enhanced by restrained bramble fruits, fermented citrus peel, an intense violet aroma and graphite minerality in depth. The attack is soft and full, the flavor savoury and cedary through to the finish, with integrated velvety tannins and lifted acidity. A perfectly woven structure is bound with signature freshness and fruit vibrancy, making this one for the long haul." - Decanter

"The latest release from Tenuta San Guido is the 2019 Bolgheri Sassicaia. The bouquet is up front and very expressive from the get-go. It offers a generous display of crunchy, dark cherry that hints at the extra concentration and fruit weight obtained in the 2019 growing season. This vintage will be remembered for the crisp richness of the fruit and its important textural imprint. It also shows fine elegance, bordering on the ethereal, with berry aromas, tarry earth and brushes of balsam herb or grilled rosemary. Sassicaia always shows an almost-glossy finely knit quality to the polished mouthfeel, and I find it again here next to fresh acidity and firm tannins. Mouthfeel in 2019 is the wine's strongest suit. The 2019 is one of the prettiest and most balanced editions of Sassicaia we've seen this past decade, along with the back-to-back duo of 2016 and 2015. The 2019 marries the precision of the 2016 with the rich fruit weight of the 2015" - Wine Advocate

´Solaia´ · Toscana IGT 2019, Villa Antinori, Toskana
Solaia · Toscana IGT 2019

Villa Antinori, Tuscany

Solaia comes from the sunniest part of the Tignanello hill. From the best grapes of the best vineyard. The rest is passion, care, attention and research. This is how Solaia was born, made from the most select grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese from the vineyard of the same name. - Gerardo [TS11/20]

"Dark luminous ruby red with opaque core. Fragrant and elegant nose, complex, of cassis and black currants, plus the finest precious wood, then again interplay of ripe blackberries and fine spicy components. On the palate enormously polished and finesse, with clear, present fruit and well-integrated tannin, comes along in many layers, precise, very long." - Falstaff

"Extraordinary rich aromas on the nose, with notes of blueberries, blackcurrants, sweet spices, tobacco and tar notes. Exciting and elegant on the palate, dense and velvety tannins, almost perfect with a structure of rare finesse, harmonious and powerful. The finish is of endless length. Great wine." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)

"This wine has a deeply savory nose, with seaweed, soy sauce, olives, tobacco, black licorice and a rich medley of cherries, blackberries and plums. The fruity, spicy palate brings more berries, dark chocolate and chili peppers, emphasized by palpable heat and sticky but gentle tannins through a seemingly infinite finish. It’s exceptionally drinkable now, but a few more years would guarantee a command performance." - Danielle Callegari (Wine Enthusiast)

Tenuta San Guido, Tuscany

One bottle each of Bolgheri Sassicaia vintages 2018, 2019 and 2020 in a high quality wooden box with hinged lid:

Description Sassicaia 2020: The harvest began in the first week of September with the grapes from the younger vineyards, starting with the Cabernet Franc, then continued with the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards at lower altitudes and ended in the last week of September with the grapes from the hills above 300 meters above sea level.

Description Sassicaia 2019: With its purist purity, the 2019 Sassicaia is close to the model of the perfect Cabernet: even after 51 vintages, Tenuta San Guido remains true to its roots and creates a dynamic and finesse-rich Maremma Cabernet that walks entirely on the paths of the great vintages. Sublime and multifaceted, the Sassicaia 51 still sees itself as a Tuscan super Tuscan blueprint, for which once even its own DOC was created.

Description Sassicaia 2018: the red wine icon of Italy turns 50: fifty vintages have passed from 1968 to 2018 and fifty editions of this pioneering Super Tuscan blueprint have been created. Yet the 2018 vintage could not be more typical: Balanced and rich in finesse, this anniversary Sassicaia presents itself as an archetype for which even its own DOC was once created. - Gerardo [TS07/21]

Cabernet-Franc | Grape variety | Buy at Gerardo

Cabernet Franc is a red grape variety grown in Italy, especially in the regions of Veneto and Tuscany. These regions offer ideal climatic conditions for viticulture, producing wines with a balance of tannins, acidity and fruitiness.

Cabernet Franc is known for its delicate aromas of red fruits such as cherries and raspberries, as well as its green notes of bell bell pepper and pepper. In Veneto, Cabernet Franc wines are often produced in a light, fruit-driven style, while Tuscany produces more powerful and complex wines, often aged in barriques, with notes of spice, leather and wood.

Cabernet Franc is a flexible wine that pairs well with many different dishes. Its mild tannins and delicate aroma make it an ideal companion for meat dishes such as beef or lamb, as well as pasta dishes with tomato sauce. Some winemakers also produce Cabernet Franc wines, which are Bordeaux-style blends with other grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These wines often have a stronger texture and richer aroma than Cabernet Franc wines produced alone.

Overall, Cabernet Franc is a versatile and enjoyable wine that can be a valuable addition to any wine library. Whether you're looking for a light and fruit-forward wine for everyday drinking or a more powerful and complex wine for special occasions, Cabernet Franc offers a wide range of options. If you would like to try Cabernet Franc, we recommend comparing wines from both regions to get a better understanding of the diversity of this grape variety. - Gerardo [TS01/23]
